Two people with the same budget can walk away with very different rings. The difference comes down to four decisions.
One: Choose the Shape Deliberately
Elongated shapes cover more of the finger for the same carat weight. An oval, pear or marquise will read larger than a round of identical weight, often noticeably so.
If size on the hand matters to you, this is the single most effective choice you can make.
Two: Do Not Overpay for Clarity
Once a stone is eye clean, additional clarity is invisible in wear. Moving from a very high clarity grade to a solid eye clean one frees up a meaningful part of your budget.
Three: Be Flexible on Colour
Slightly warmer colour grades cost less and are very difficult to detect once the stone is set, particularly in yellow or rose gold. If your setting is white metal, stay a little higher up the scale.
Four: Hold Firm on Cut
This is the one place not to economise. Cut is what makes a diamond look alive. Excellent or Very Good, every time.
Putting It Together
Applied together, these four decisions typically buy you a visibly larger and better looking stone than the same money spent without them.
